SCREAMIN’ EAGLE® PERFORMANCE PARTS “RACE AT THE RALLY” SATISFIES THE NEED FOR SPEED AT STURGIS DRAGWAY.
NORLIN, VREELAND, MCCAA DOUBLE UP THEIR WINNINGS.
WINSTON-SALEM, NC, August 15, 2006- Despite the occasional interruptions from mother nature, the Screamin’ Eagle® Performance Parts Race at the Rally on August 6th & 7th came off nicely and left fans craving more of the high powered thrills of All Harley Drag Racing.
Qualifying was delayed for early showers on Sunday, but once the skies cleared and the track was race-ready, the competitors (over 130 of them) took the track seeking the cash prizes totaling over $60,000.
In Screamin’ Eagle® Top Fuel, eight riders showed up to do battle on the 1/8th mile track.
2004 Sturgis event winner, Griz Robinson qualified on the pole with a 4.614 at 157mph in front of a close 4.617 at 159mph from Julian Seaman who was awarded the #2 position.
On race day, Robinson brought fans to the edge of their seats when he charged down the strip just inches from the retaining wall by the time he reached the top end. He slowed his qualifying number to a 5.10 at 114mph while David Bawcom (#8 qualifier) took the upset win with a 4.96 at 148mph to advance to round No. 2.
#2 qualifier, Seaman was also upset in a race decided at the tree against Rick Erdman.
Erdman got out with a .059 for a 5.13 at 142mph score while Seaman managed only a .136 at the tree followed by a quicker 5.12 at 148mph; but Erdman’s quicker reaction was good enough for the hole shot win to advance.
Erdman was riding on a Doc Harley-Davidson sponsored ride in Sturgis and Doc, himself was also in the field. Steve “Doc” Hopkins joined teammate; Erdman in the 2nd round after his opponent, Leo Hess was unable to get down the track in the opening round against Hopkins who scored a 4.68 at 132mph.
In the final pairing of the opening round, Mark Blackmer (#3 qualifier) got by Canadian Ken Kent with a 4.85 at 156mph to a 4.89 at 133mph from Kent.
Blackmer ended his day in round two when he broke while his round No. 2 opponent, Erdman advanced to the semis with a 4.85 at 146mph.
Erdman’s teammate, Hopkins also advanced to the semis when he scored the hole shot on David Bawcom. Hopkins landed a .122 at the tree (4.90 at 126mph) over Bawcom’s slower .230 reaction and 4.81 at 153mph pass.
With the Erdman and Hopkins final round pairing, a win for Doc’s Harley-Davidson was inevitable. Erdman secured the winning spot after Hopkins had to shut it off in the water box. Erdman took the single pass with a 4.88 at 149mph for the win.
In JIMS Pro Fuel, Julian Seaman and Mark Blackmer, both doing double-duty in Fuel categories in Sturgis were the only two contenders for the Pro Fuel prize. Blackmer was the #1 qualifier with a 4.69-160mph pass, the only lap he made on qualifying day, while Seaman’s best qualifying shot was a 4.88 at 151mph.
When the two paired in the elimination final, Blackmer was out of the contest early when he drew the red light foul on a 4.69 at 161mph pass and Seaman took the win with a 4.95 at 148mph.
In Kresto Pro Drag, defending his title from 2005, Greg Byrnes jumped in front of the pack early with a 5.01 at 140mph in qualifying for the No. 1 position in front of Will Simplot who scored a 5.49 at 124mph for the No. 2 position. Kersten Heiling and Howard Wiggins rounded out the 3rd and 4th spots in the 4-bike field.
On race day, Byrnes and Simplot both advanced to meet in the finals. Byrnes had the early advantage with a .133 reaction time followed by a 5.33 at 114mph, but Simplot made up the difference despite his .358 start with a faster 5.07 at 140mph lap for the win.
Dennis Cunningham grabbed the No. 1 spot in S & S Pro Gas competition with a 5.39 at 124mph best lap. Matt Spencer was 2nd with a 5.68 at 126mph.

In G-Squared Street Pro, three contestants made up the field in Sturgis. Robbie McCaa was the top qualifier after three rounds on Sunday with a 5.99 at 117mph best pass. Verl “Smitty” Smith was 2nd with a 6.22 at 116mph and Liz Davis rounded out the trio with a 6.56 at 109mph.
